May 10th was the Skull Skates Session at SBC Rampsteraunt in Vancouver, BC featuring live music, a Barrier Kult demo and an art show featuring works by El Boyo and Mutant / P.D. of Skull Skates.
El Boyo is a legendary figure in the Vancouver character-driven art scene, and his new works are exemplary of his ability to portray different cultural phenomenon via simple yet powerful characterizations fueled by an obsession for mid 20th century Walter Lanz (Woody Woodpecker, etc.) and Dave Fleischer (Popeye, etc.) cartoon works.
The Mutant works by P.D. are his continued obsessed foray into the post-consumerism world; human-like figures that have been deteriorated into ghost-like shapes after being succumbed by heavily industrialized society. Originally featured on the mid 1980s Skull Skates Mutant deck, the ‘mutants’ have turned into a Vancouver underground mainstay as you see them everywhere - from old Seylynn bowl photographs to lurking wall pieces.
The Skull Skates Session night was a large scale art show with numerous pieces and inevitably some of the art didn’t sell. Thus, Skull Skates is featuring here your chance to own some of the original works via online sales. All proceeds go toward paying for underprivileged kids to get booked into skateboard ramp lessons at SBC Rampsteraunt.
Also included here are new paintings by artist Brad Davidson that feature various abstract contemplations of the Skull Skates logo. Even via heavy displacement and refraction of the logo, the works feature a powerful sense of continuity.
Plus - a special ‘Untitled’ wood carving by the Nomad, Bill Danforth!
All the art for sale is below and purchasing is easy. Simply email warehouse@skullskates.com with the title of the work you are interested in. Once confirmed, Skull Skates will provide you with payment information. Once payment is confirmed, the piece will marked as sold here, online. First come, first served. Please message the email above if you need any more detailed images or information on the works.
All items show a suggested minimum donation price (contribute more if you are able) and again, all proceeds from sale of art will go towards downtown Eastside community skate camps. Art may be picked up or shipping can be arranged from PD’s Hot Shop in Vancouver.
